The Vocational Training Facility, owned by the city of Austin, is a center to
train local citizens in the skills required for local industry jobs. The Arthur
B. DeWitty Center was the first of two public buildings that were part of a
Master Plan located in an old Austin low-income neighborhood. The
densely wooded, steeply sloping park site provided the opportunity to
design large public buildings at a residential scale. To minimize the impact
of the two-story facility, the building is partially engaged into the sloping
site to create a one-story front facade. This, along with the playful use of
gables and dormers, breaks up the building's mass. A generous three part
cupola brings light into the center of the building.
