The proposal for expanding the existing Davenport Building, located within
a complex of City owned animal shelter structures on the north shore of
Town Lake, had three main objectives. The primary objective was to meld
the old and the new together in a seamless design by utilizing an
undulating roof and roof overhang which formed a dramatic vocal point for
public awareness of its location and its function. Secondly, several existing
disjointed buildings housed various functions which due to their need for
daily interaction were inefficient and uncoordinated and would be much
more successful positioned under one roof. Thirdly, the expansion design
proposed replacing these existing buildings which had outlived their
structural usefulness.
